Since its inauguration in 2012, Design Days Dubai has been the only fair of its kind in the Middle East and South Asia region; an exhibition dedicated to collectible and limited-edition design objects, showcasing pieces from leading international designers as well as galleries alongside up-and-coming design talent from across the world. In addition, the fair presented a strong non-commercial programme consisting of talks, workshops, installations and live performances.
A catalyst for the development of the design community in the United Arab Emirates and the region and a fair of discovery with a primary focus on contemporary creations, Design Days Dubai’s unique format provided an international platform for the region’s emerging design studios and solo designers to debut their furniture, lightings and design objects, featuring them alongside a diverse mix of the world’s design galleries.
By unifying with the commercial design and furniture showcase of Downtown Design, it will help further establish Dubai as a destination where design thrives and introduce the international industry to opportunities in the region.
Rawan Kashkoush, Head of Programming of Dubai Design Week and Design Days Dubai, says: “Design Days Dubai acted as Dubai’s very own wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, gathering design pieces from around the world and from all over the region, carefully arranged for collectors, the design interested and the inquisitive public to experience for one moment in the year. Welcoming the fair over to November to join its fellow design heavyweight, Downtown Design, as the newly named ‘Downtown Editions’ is a most natural progression; how fortunate we are to visit them both side by side.”
Dubai Design Week is the region’s largest creative festival, reflecting Dubai’s position as design capital of the Middle East and providing the perfect stage for the two design fairs to thrive together and introduce the international industry to opportunities in the region, as the week’s commercial centrepiece.
